Haha, is this game show real or is this just some comedy skit? I had to agree when the guy said "So you didn't get the sandals just to prove your point?!" That's exactly what he did, he refused to get them just to be anal about the rules. I'd be annoyed too if that were me, but frankly rules are rules and if you've got £2,000 on the line you might as well make an effort to read them before playing etc.
