Tis a biiig shame theyre not in DoWII, I'd love to have a defense map ala Helms Deep from LotR Battle for Middle Earth 2, Tyranids attacking and Tau defending. With the Tau defensive stratergy being more about lightning counter stikes and rapid flanking manevours. I can just imagine a horde of guants streaming toward a wall lined with firewarriors as Devilfish and Hammerheads deploy troops and drones around them, creating the most awesome meat grinder ever. *Goes off to install DoW again*
Tau are not very good at defence in my opinion, or at the very least I personally do not play them with a defensive mindset. If there was a scenario where I had to defend a stronghold, I'd be playing as the Imperial Guard since they are best suited for defensive strategies.
I played a few games with the Eldar yesterday and they have got to be my second favourite faction. I love the whole teleport system they have going. As if constantly teleporting your troops next to the enemy base wasn't an awesome enough ability, you can even teleport your base structures. My only gripe is that their units were pretty lame in combat.

Eldar reflect the tabletop game very wel in DoW, regarding the way that each unit is specialised in a certain aspect of combat.
I really love DoW, but unfortunatly i am very much lacking in skill when it comes to RTS games, at least RTS' like DoW. I'm much better at the slower, resource gathering style of RTS such as Total War and Age of Empires.

In DoW Tau arn't very good at defending, table top thou they excel at it. The fluff does say that they dislike holding a static position, prefering to strike the attackers, hence there hit and run tactics. I will say I don't think that Tau translate as well as other armies into DoW, skimmers shouldn't be stopped by a cliff and should be much much faster than tracked/wheeled veicles. But that would make skimmer armies too powerful in an RTS.

I don't think Tau are very good at defending in most scenarios on the tabletop game, but in Dawn of War you can go a long way by placing a few Firewarriors in an area with good visibility as they will take down most enemies before they get in close enough to even shoot. On the Tabletop game however it's very hard to avoid CQC as at best you will take down 1-2 squads before the enemy is up close and personal.
Add to this the fact that it's rare to even be on the defensive in the tabletop game because most game types require you to move to and capture objectives. So yeah, I'm a firm believer that Tau are not meant for defensive tactics as their lore also dictates, but they can be very defensive in Dawn of War when they wish to be without a doubt.
Also Jamie I pretty much suck at RTS games also since I only mess about in Skirmish when I play them. Although as you say the Eldar translate well into their tabletop counterparts, I don't feel that their units are strong enough. Their CQC and ranged units really didn't impress me that much, and the only unit I actually found powerful was the warp spiders but you can only train three of them. The fleet of foot ability is great though, loved it.

Tau defensive tactics aren't what any other army would use. Like I said they don't just sit there and wait to get charged, they'll use the mobility to break apart the enemy's attack before it ever reaches it's target. Devilfish dropping squads on the flanks, hammerheads creating fire lanes impassable for tanks, snipers doing the same for heavy infantry. Pirhannas and Crisis teams dancing in and out of cover to stay safe and pull groups away from support. Dividing the enemy up and then wiping out lone squads. The old static army I fielded of course wouldn't be able to pull that off, and as numerous play tests showed, static isn't all that great.

I should say we told you so in regards to being static on tabletop, but it happens. Also I guess if you try and be defensive while being mobile it can be effective on Dawn of War perhaps, it's not a tactic I've really used a lot. If I'm going to defend I prefer the more tradition static defense style, trying to defend while being mobile is interesting but is also very problematic. When your enemy overwhelms you with too many strikes, which they will if they're a half-decent opponent, you're going to have a tough time staying alive and remaining mobile at the same time. Personally if it were me, if I'm going to put effort into being mobile then I might as well just play offensively since it's much more natural than trying to be defensive yet mobile.

I've not played and real people yet and I can only beat the CPU on Easy still, I'm just playing Skirmish and Campaign for the time being to learn about the Tau and Eldar play styles.

Yah it is out, I saw someone on my friends list playing it yesterday.

So does anyone other than Michael have DoW2, or planning to get it soon? I'm mainly interested in playing it with other Zetzio people so if only me and Michael are getting it then I might stick with DoW1 or RA3.

Heads up boys, Dawn of War II is on sale now at Steam for £26.24 making it roughly £10 cheaper than the usual £34.99 price tag. As usual, this sale is not permanent so you'll want to pick it up sooner rather than later, especially since I caught wind of this a little later than usual. :]
I've been planning to pick this up eventually so I just made the purchase seeing as I'd rather buy it not for £10 less than pay full price for it a few months from now. I think I will uninstall DoW and focus on this once I start playing it, no point playing both after all.
EDIT
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention they also added a singleplayer demo on Steam for those of you who are still on the fence about the game. This isn't like the MP beta obviously, just a bunch of singleplayer missions to give you an idea of how the campaign will play like with the more RPG-like elements.

Thanks for the heads up, too poor to buy it but I'll take a gander at the demo.

I have been meaning to pick this up. The beta had some large problems but I heard they where sort of fixed in Day 0 patch.
As its £10 cheaper and its Loan Day !! I have brought it, anybody up for some games tonight or this week.

I'm not sure when I'll have the free time, especially since I don't plan on playing this game properly any time soon. I just bought it for the sale since I was going to get it sooner or later, but at the moment I have other games I'm playing.

One cool thing about DoW2 is the fact it's using Games for Windows Live. A lot of PC gamers aren't a fan of this last I checked, but for us Xbox 360 owners it's actually something which makes life a lot easier since you're basically playing the game with your Xbox Live account. the GWL interface isn't too bad but I don't think it alerts you when you get messages and shit like Xbox Live does, so you gotta check for yourself from time to time.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Nope i've gotten messages on XBL same as normal. It's a great feature for me because i hate signing up for Gamespy accounts and shit when i want to play these games online. Although, it doesn't seem to be too good an idea for other PC gamers, because the main lobby for games on DOW2 rarely has more than 5 games being hosted at once.
DOW - Soulstorm still has around 100 different ones at a time in the main lobby. Seems not alot of people have live.
Oh and i'm up for a game on this with any of you guys who want to play. I'd like this to be the game i focus on after my exams - non 360 game i mean, and try to become pro at it. So anyone who wants to get there with me i'd be happy.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
I don't know what kind of time you play Soulstorm at but I've never seen anywhere near 100 rooms online at once. I can't comment on DoW2 since I've never tried playing a public game yet, but on Soulstorm I'd see about 15 rooms listed as a rough estimation.

Remember, you might be looking at only one Server. There's around 20 different servers for different countries - although anyone can go into any server they like. When you log in you'll go right into the Europe server, but if you look up at the American one at the very top, it usually has tons of rooms.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Those are just chat rooms the servers all share the same list.
I would be up for playing some DOW 2 it is pretty fun, still waiting for a good AI mod as the skirmish ai sucks.

Yeah, I'm not sure what servers I was looking at so you may be right there. I haven't touched DoW in a while so I probably won't know for sure either way. I'll be up for some DoW2 games at some point, like I said on MSN though just give me a heads up so that I'm not busy at the time. I don't really have any plans to be 'pro' on an RTS, but I am definitely looking to improve for the entertainment value so yeah.

Just found this video of DOW 2. This is some very early footage before even alpha.
I have to say I wish they had kept it like the video as it looks alot better (Not GFX as this is early) then the DOW 2 we have now.
