Has anyone else been keeping up with Bungie's recent announcements regarding their latest Halo game? They've revealed a lot of awesome weapons, explained how Elites and Spartans will play differently, changed the shield systems and much more. I'm looking forward to that Reach beta on May 3, because that seems to be the only time I'll find myself putting that copy of ODST back into my 360. It was a fun game while it lasted, but once you finish campaign, horde mode got kinda boring fast.

It's looking intresting, and I'm looking foward to the beta. I'm still not sure I can go back to playing a game in the vein of Halo after spending so much time of "realistic" shooters.

There are a lot of weapons I'm looking forward to using; especially the new grenade launcher. If the grenade hits the enemy, it explodes on impact. If it hits things like walls, it will bounce like a frag and explode after a couple of seconds. But here's the awesome part - you can hold the right trigger so that the grenade doesn't explode until you let go of it. I totally want to whore that gun if I can grab it on the maps.

I look forwarded to hearing about the beta and if it will be alot different to Halo.
Now I did enjoy Halo's MP but it will feel odd going back to it after games like COD and BF.

That Nade launcher does sound awesome and could be alot of fun.
You got a link to the bit about Spartans and elites playing differently.

Yeah, it's all information from Bungie's three latest Weekly Updates. Here's the most interesting post out of the three, as it discusses a variety of topics regarding Reach's multi-player. They talk about the 'perks', the weapons, the Elite/Spartan differences and so on. It's definitely worth reading as unlike most of Bungie's Weekly Updates, this one's full of shit that's relevant to my interests.

Looks mighty fine. The diffrences between Spartans and Elites sound really intresting, and rather fun. Hell the size diffrence alone will probaly be enough to balance them in Spartan vs Elite multiplayer.

I'm actually torn between the two. You guys probably know by now that I favour stealth and speed. The Elite will give me speed, but the Spartan has a smaller footprint allowing me to hide behind things easier... Taking into consideration motion sensors, speed will not help me hide, but help me rush. Besides, Halo isn't about stealth, it's about having a bigger gun than your opponent most of the time.

I am still not sure if I am looking forward to this game or not. I have enjoyed the Halo games but only really as split screen games to play with Mates.
Is it going to be that different to Halo 3 ?

    Thanks for that video.
Yep this game has gone off my radar now, it looks just like halo 3 with different weapons and gamemodes.
Dont know what I was expecting I just remember early on bungie saying the MP would be massively different this looks no differnt. Just a few small tweaks, I am sure people will lap it up though.

I'd say it's quite an evolution. Weaponary seems to be much more varied than in previous titles, and seems to be slightly more weighted to mid range combat, especially so with the sheild changes they have worked in. Also the armour abilitys will allow very varried playstyles compared to what we have seen in the past.

As a side note, the Legendary edition for Reach is out on the interwebs now, it's very pricey at £100 but seems much higher quality then the Halo 3 version. It's main draw is a fairly awsome statue featuring the "Noble" team spartans, far cooler than the cat helmet! Play has a picture here.

I pre-ordered one. Damn me and my love of Halo.

As someone who collects videogame and anime figurines, I've noticed that any statue that comes with a game's special edition is going to be pretty mediocre. My latest lesson learned was with Aion, which came with a statue that makes me cringe every time I see it.

There's a multiplayer gameplay video from Bungie which shows nothing but gameplay and the guy playing explains things about the various weapons he uses during the match. I thought it was quite a good watch, and gave me a nice idea of what to expect from the beta.

    http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=news&cid=25834

They also added five new MP gameplay videos to GameTrailers.

Other than the guy sounding like a douche a cool video.
The ghost aimming thing does not seem needed and looks like it will just help noobs. I like how you can spawn in on your wing man.
Evade looks fucking badass. I am still not sure on the loadouts, I do like games where you can choose your weapons but starting with a needler, powersword or shotgun just seems wrong but will have to see how it plays out.

The beamrifle thing looks pretty easy to use.

George, a quick explanation on load-outs for you in case you didn't get this from the Bungie Weekly Update post I linked some time back. They're not like COD4 where you pick which primary weapon and perk you get out of a selection, it is all pre-set by Bungie themselves and will vary based on the game type you're playing.

So if you're playing CTF, both sides may have access to a DMR rifle class with Sprint, a Shotgun class with Active Camo and a Sniper Class with... whatever. Once you finish that match and the next game starts, which could be Slayer, you'll get completely different pre-selected load-outs fine tuned for playing that game type on that particular map.

Starting with a shotgun is good for defensive actions but good luck trying to close into your enemies with a Shotgun when they can see you coming. Now assuming you get Active Camo in the load-out (that's up to Bungie), you may be able to reduce the chances a little, but Active Camo shows you on the motion tracker when it's on, plus the faster you move the less camouflaged you are. I think it will make for some interesting combat, and the Elite + Sprint ability is really getting my excited. Did you guys see how fucking fast he can flank someone during combat? That's insane, imagine killing a shotgun player, taking his shotgun and using that sprint to get up close.

I did realize that the loadsout are preset for the game mode but still. I am sure in the game he said he had unlocked the grenade launcher loadout. I did not have that much trouble getting close with the shotgun in Halo 3 but then it depends on the map.

I did nearly jizz in my pants when I saw how fast he could evade. The sprint power is spartan only I seem to remember so he was just flanking using the evade power.
The jump pack looked fun but it does look like using it will get you killed.
Armour lock looks like it could be good but the people in the video seemed a bit noobish. Also just chucking nades at them and waiting for them to get up seems a good tactic.

Ah yeah, I think Sprint is only for Spartans. I believe Elites actually have the movement speed of a Spartan on full Sprint, so they're already naturally fast. If that flanking was from the Evade ability then I'm surprised at the distance that roll travels.

As for the grenade launcher he unlocked, as the game progressed some higher level shit gets unlocked for players to use. So yeah, eventually if the game stretches out long enough, you'll gain access to grenade launchers and rocket launchers - I imagine this is to counter the fact that as the game progresses, the vehicles being spawned change from Warthogs to Tanks.

That is a good point with the missile launchers and the spawning of the tanks.

I believe the beta starts tomorrow (May 3rd), I wonder if I'll be able to pull myself away from Super Street Fighter IV to actually play it. Looking forward to seeing if this will be my new FPS obsession seeing as MW2 gets boring when you play it too much because the only weapon you ever need to use is a UMP45.

The beta is up and running, but the servers are getting hammered so it's nigh on impossible to get a game yet.

I had friends over, playing SSF4 until 2AM so didn't really get a chance to install the beta yet. I'll most likely install it at some point today, though this beta came at a bad time since I'm playing SSF4 and also trying to play the APB beta.

I have been following APB for a while. You played the beta yet, would like to know if its any good.

See a few player reviews on Halo Reach, it seems its either "meh" or "pretty good". Not seen any massively praising it.

There was a beta session on Sunday but I completely forgot about it since I was on SSF4 for the entire day. The next one is on the 9th so I've added that to my calendar to ensure I don't forget this time.

I installed the beta last night and gave it a quick spin before falling asleep. I think I played about three matches and it was and still is kinda weird getting used to these new controls. Whenever I was in the heat of battle, I'd press B to melee and RB to reload, but I'm sure I'll get used to it after a few hours of play.

The armour perks seemed like a good feature from my brief experience with them. I tried all of them out except for the Armour Lock one, and it seems like the jetpack will come in very handy as you can gain the high ground advantage over your enemies by launching yourself up onto a roof where you can snipe or scout.

The invisibility seems pretty useless against smart players since once active, you constantly appear on everyone's motion sensors. If you try to counter this by constantly moving, the camo is easier to detect the faster you move, so personally I can't see any major tactical advantage to using it unless you're playing people that rarely use their motion sensors.

The Sprint ability is also rather bad-ass, and seemed like the second most useful Spartan perk to me at the time. It lets you get in and out of combat quickly, it lets you rush objectives and it's deadly when combined with an energy sword that's sometimes lying around on the map somewhere. The camo perk would be meh with the energy sword, but a guy who can get up in your face super fast and then shank you is terrifying since you usually won't be able to take their shields down before they reach you, unless you're packing better firepower than they are.

I'd get into the weapons too but that's a whole other six paragraphs.

Change the control scheme to Recon for Halo 3 default layout.

The stalker armor is pretty good if you're camping a tight corridor with a shotgun or a sword. Jet pack and Sprint are a must at the beginning of the game, using those 2 will speed up the time that you can get to a power weapon and set up map control. Anyone that played Halo competitively will know that if you control the power weapons and certain map areas you win. Armor lock is just gay, really kills the flow when I am on a killing spree.

Overall I am happy, this game requires you to think fast and posses FPS skills(good aim, reflexes, movement, good eye and hand coordination)

I pretty much die on this game cause either my team is fail and all they do is moan while the enemy team gets map control or the person that killed me is better than me.

I'm playing Reach right now and quite enjoying it. I'm getting sick K/D ratios and I LOVE the pace of the game when using Sprint. If you're using Sprint and you grab the Gravity Hammer, it's basically GG at that point, you can sprint into someone's face and then press the right trigger for an instant kill. Unless they too have a one-shot weapon, or decide to stick you before dying, you've basically got a free kill.

ODST was decent because it offered a new campaign and Horde mode, both of which are things I enjoy playing through once but not the kind of content you'll see me going back to. My favourite aspect of gaming is playing against real people and enjoying the game within the game, AKA the meta-game. Halo Reach feels like a new multiplayer experience, but not new enough that fans will grumble about it being 'different'. It's still Halo, which was never a bad game, but it's just even more polished with a few new spices added. I wish Modern Warfare 2 took notes from Halo in t his regard, I would rather have a slightly modified sequel instead of a heavily modified one with lots of balance issues.

If people tell you that this is just Halo with perks, they are mostly correct. However, it's the negativity of the statement I would disagree with. Sometimes the simplest tweaks change the meta-game hugely, the addition of these perks in conjunction with new weapons creates a great fragging experience.

Now, the question is whether or not this initial excitement I'm feeling will last for 365 days, or 365 minutes. COD4 blew me away and kept me addicted for years, Halo 3 blew me away but kept me addicted for a month. I can only hope Reach will re-ignite my Halo flame.

Reach is a great evolution of the franchise for me. It has been modernised, bringing it to the head of the pack with the current trend of a "class" system, but does it in it's own way, and I like that. The pace is faster than most console shooters at the moment, but still nothing like UT, which I think is a good thing, the limitations of the pad makes a slower game my choice for console gaming.

I'm also impressed with weapon balance, I've yet to meet a weapon I thought was broken. I had reservations about the plasma launcher, but it seems to require a fairly long range to the target to be truley effective, meaning it becomes almost an anti-tank sniper rifle, but with more limitations than the splazer.

All in all I'm impressed, but I still want to play with a full team of freinds.

The plasma launcher has its weaknesses, like a good player with Sprint/Jetpack can dodge them. I also imagine Armour Lock can ignore the damage completely, and who knows, maybe activating your Stealth disables the launcher's lock-on?
