I sat down to do some modeling for the first time last night and I built a bunch of Fire Warriors along with my Devilfish. I got a little impatient so I decided to undercoat four of my models so I could get cracking onto the painting part and see how much I really fail at it. These are my first four attempts at modeling and painting. Note: If you see any weird black blobs on the orange, it's the ink wash, not parts I forgot to paint.

I really like the gunmetal one, it looks all futuristic and sweet :D
Posted 3 years ago # | -
Not a bad start, pretty decent to say they're your first model.
Posted 3 years ago # | -
I still haven't found a colour scheme I'm happy with.
Thought the gunmetal one looked awesome 'till I ruined it with the red.

great first models. Love the gunmetal but dont like the red gun. Not sure what colour I would paint the gun.

My point exactly. I painted he guy gunmetal and he looked awesome, then I sat down to think what to paint the gun and that's when I realised that no matter what colour you go with, it's going to ruin it. I should have just kept it gunmetal and black, but ah well.

That is what I Have done with my Iron Warriors at the start I had a few red bolters or white one. Now I just keep them metal or black and then about 3 per squad I give the Black and Yellow Hazard Stripe which makes them stand out.
For Tau I am not really sure as nearly every tau I have seen is in the classic colour. I would keep the gun black and then maybe use a light colour to pick out the detail on it.

Gun black, a codex grey highlight, with a green/red to pick out any lights/mini-monitos etc on the gun.

Yea true, the red did kinda smack it but the gunmetal is the best out of the rest. Didnt realize it had red when I saw it yesterday lol

I painted this fellow today, I'm quite pleased with the results too. Looks like my Tau are going to go with jungle camo. If anyone is curious, the armour is Knarloc Green while the backpack and transmitter are Calthan Brown. I used Mechrite Red for the tiny helmet lens and weapon scope details, while finishing it all off with a coat if Devlan Mud ink wash which really helped on this colour scheme.

Yeah, go with that, it looks really good.

Reminds me of the master chief but none the less looks awesome
Posted 3 years ago # | -
I like it and if you have pathfinders in your army you can make them look all stealthy like with grass and stuff on them.
Posted 3 years ago # | -
Looks good man, those ink washes are a god-send.
And what's that second colour you used? You said you used a brown for the backpack and shit.. but on the gun theirs the main green along the barrel, and then another colour across the hilt? That two-colour effect looks good. Unless those were the only areas you used the mud wash?

Hm, not sure which part you're talking about but if you mean the light grey at the back of the gun, I think that's just a grey area that my black undercoat missed. The tiny red line on the first pic isn't paint, while taking the photo I think one of the bits of grass was stuck on the model, removed that afterwards. Aside from that, the colour of the gun is just undercoat black mixed with the green and brown at the tip.
Oh and that camo idea sounds good George, I might do that for my stealth units. Honestly, I really hated the grass, it's a mess to try and use, the sand was so much easier so I may just go with sand and paint it green or something. Otherwise it could be interesting sticking grass on certain parts of my stealth units to make some sort of gillie suit. The green/brown/black scheme seems to work well though, and since the main reason for Tau colours is camouflage, I can get away with using this scheme while staying in the lore limits. Hell, I might even create a custom backstory for my army since I'm not trying to make them like the other Tau paint jobs. Perhaps they can be a cadre that split away from the main force and eventually became mercenaries, working alongside their Kroot mercenaries for personal profit.

Yeah, that sounds like an awesome idea Nemph. Always makes you feel more personal to your army when you do stuff like that, and the glueing grass thing can be simple. Either you can do it precisely, or you could just paint PVA glue lightly over the model (It won't show up, just make it look brighter) and then dump the model in the grass. That's what i did with one of my old models and it came out covered, really good.
Posted 3 years ago # | -
what i did with grass is go outside paint the base in a layer of PVA glue wack aload of the grass on the base roughly then blow the base a few times and it looks great
Posted 3 years ago # | -
The grass was a bitch because I couldn't dip my base into it. I painted PVA glue on the base and it was so much easier and neater to just dip my base into the sand and take it out. I might even put PVA glue on the cloth areas and stick sand on it, then paint the sand into a camo pattern. Otherwise if I can't be arsed putting glue on my models, I'm just going to paint a camo pattern on them.

Damn that looks awsome, how did you use the inks? I'm not very confident to go using them on my warriors.

Well the point of the inks is pretty much to seep into the cracks of your model. I simply dipped my brush into the ink and coated the entire model with it, making sure I got the liquid into all the little curves and what not. This is basically a very easy way of having to use a fine detail brush to hand-paint your Fire Warrior's shoulder pad insignia, or the bits on his armour plating and gun. I think using inks depends on the colour you're going for and the style, not every single army needs to use inks, but it sure works well with my colour scheme.

Hey guys, it seems I'll be getting back into my painting soon. My local library has a monthly manga meet-up that I attend, but the guy who organises all of this wants to expand it. He's making it grow into a gaming meet-up as well, so people can bring in consoles to play and even Warhammer.
Since he works at the library, Games Workshop apparently has a deal set up for such places where he can get armies for the library at very cheap prices. There are already about 4-5 people who said they play Warhammer 40K, so now I've got another reason to finish painting my godly Tau units.

Good to hear you have some more people to play with, and good to here that more Tau will take to the field!
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Good luck man. I need to find time to go about completing my army.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
By the way, I'm having second thoughts about that green colour scheme I posted way back when in this topic. I think I'm going to buy a Fire Warrior set and use all of the models to experiment on paint schemes or something.

Colour schemes are often a pain to work out, luckly for me I tend to be able to pick out what I want quite easily, I can just envision what I want. Is there any chance of you reposting the green scheme? Photobucket is saying they're gone. If you want some inspiration for a green Cadre, check out Adam Smith's blog, http://warhammer-tau-army.blogspot.com/
His scheme is rather good.

I'll take a new snap of it next time I'm using my camera. I'm thinking of maybe just using the army painter on DOW to get a general idea of what colours to use. The nice thing about the army painter is that it actually uses the same paint names as the actual Games Workshop colours. :]

Yup, the DoW system is damn useful.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Here's the original prototype I painted, re-uploaded to my Photobucket.

Excuse my shoddy painting, and believe it or not, that's by far the best looking paint job I have so far, the others are way worse. I'm currently trying out something on one of my 'test subjects' whilst posting this, fingers crossed it looks cool.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Here's the result of my two tests:

Anyone know where I can buy small packs of very fine sand? The stone effect would look excellent if the stones weren't so big and varied in size. I want to experiment with dipping an entire figure into sand, and then painting over it to give them a very rough look. Any ideas where I can find such sand other than the fucking beach and shit?

I don't like it, not my cup of tea at all, but your models man! All that matters is that you like 'em.
