I don't like neither myself, but I think fine sand could change that.

I think the top one would look alot better if the guy was the same colour as the rocks - then it'd be like he had camoflauged himself in. Cool effects though.

It seems GW sells sand, so I will pop into the Wood Green branch and buy one to play about with. Since I modelled my FWs wrong due to the instructions not telling me that certain legs are meant to go with certain arms for optimum results, I'm just using them all for testing out colours and effects.
My only worry is my Kroot units, as they will be a lot more tricky to paint because of their exposed flesh and shit. Fire Warriors are fully armoured so it's pretty straight forward painting the armour plates.

Good thing is, with the Kroot you can really go wild and do whatever colours wherever you want. They're not in a uniform like Tau infantry, so you could get paint the entire Kroot one green, and then use a darker green ink over the top - and wallah you'd have a pretty nice kroot.

That's true, I'll mess about with that at home to see how well it holds up.

Yeah, that's a quick and easy way to paint them, but I think you still need an accent colour to make the model pop. IMO, using a wash or ink is good for shading, but you can't just leave it at that stage. You still need to go back, touch up the base colour and then highlight to get an average to good looking model. Leaving it at the wash stage will, most of the time leave the model looking patchy.

The guy at GW who has a Tau army is in today, so I called up to let him know I'm popping by after work with my models so he can teach me how to effectively paint my army. I'll also be buying a few models whilst I'm there because nearly everything I built from the starter kit was done wrong in one form or another. Like gluing the turret of my Devilfish so it doesn't swivel, or putting the wrong arms on the wrong bodies with my Fire Warriors.
I will need to get a list put together for a 500 point army since that will be my minimum starting point. Once I paint all of them and I feel comfortable with my tactics in that point limit, I'll expand once again.

I did the Devilfish Burst Cannon thing, it dosen't really matter game wise so I'm not fussed, although some of my models were put together awfully, like my Pirhannas, they need replacing. What do you mean by wrong arms on the wrong bodies?
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Though the parts are flexible enough to be used on any body, they look odd in their stances. If you look at the box shot of Fire Warriors, they use specific arms on specific bodies/legs. When you use random ones like me, you end up having a model that may end up looking a bit off. That's why I've been using my starter set for painting practice.

Tested out two new paint schemes today... It is worth noting that the second one displays my first attempt at trying to highlight crap. I mixed the grey with some white and just tried brushing over the edges on various bits of armour, but I think the brush-strokes were too thick.

They both actually look pretty awesome. Good job man.

I thought the grey/orange combination was quite good, and believe I could improve upon this prototype by adding some more details if I decided to stick with it. The main issue with grey is that it's barely standing out from the undercoat black, thus the orange is the only colour that stands out on the outfit.
The purple is surprisingly good looking in person, the camera doesn't do it justice. I used the light purple for the details but my biggest issue with this one is how plain it looks overall. I think using a white undercoat on the purple will make it look a lot more interesting.
The thing is, although the grey/orange one is the most interesting to me out of the two, my green/brown Fire Warrior still doesn't look too bad to me.
So which of the colour schemes thus far looks the best?

As I said online last night, big fan of the grey and orange scheme, I think it looks really sharp. If you want to try for more detail you can try doing a lense effect on the helmet "eyes" and rifle scopes.
I'm assuming that's when you add a bit of white to the corner of the eyes to make it look like it's reflecting light. That is a nice touch, but adding that kind of detail on every Fire Warrior is a bit time consuming since you need to be careful with the brush. I think I will save that kind of detail for commander and elite models.

While it does require a steady hand, it dosen't take that long. Just have to wait for each layer to dry, so do a whole squad at a time. The effect is incredible, and valuable for Firewarriors as the "eyes" are the visual focal point of the model.
