Hot damn! We have a new forum...

Yes, yes, due to phpBB3 having some serious security and feature issues, we've left it in the dark. Thankfully I managed to migrate everything from one piece of software to an entirely different piece of software, because, well, I'm awesome.

There will no doubt be some anomalies which need to be cleared up, but you can make me aware of those when you stumble across them.

The major thing is that your passwords may not have migrated successfully, so:

If you're unable to login with your password, try running through the password recovery.
If the password recovery doesn't work (unlikely), or you don't receive your recovery e-mail, leave me a message here, there or anywhere, and I will reset your password to something derogatory and insulting, just for you.

Take note that bbPress is quite a change from phpBB3. The way these forums function are the same at a basic level, but the advanced options are a little different. I will add forum rules soon to lay down the groundwork on how to make topics as I no longer want people making a topic like "Halo" and grouping all Halo discussion into that.

I want people to branch out as much as they want into seperate topics, make a topic about your favourite weapons in Halo for example, or a topic about the Elites in Halo and so on. Some topics, like the 'New Shit' one doesn't work well when fragmented but these sort of topics are few and far between.

Also, all posts and topics can be tagged, I definitely encourage you to use tags as it's a big aspect of bbPress. Basically if I were to make a topic on Halo, an obvious tag would be 'Halo'. You could also add more if you wanted, like 'Xbox 360', 'First-person shooter' or whatever. Tags are basically categories to help sort your topic, and commonly used tags will be listed on the side of the forum similar to how we have a tag cloud in the blog.

Post any questions and issues in this topic for us to answer, and hope you guys will be pleased with bbPress. The way the forum looks is temporary by the way, my main priority was to get a working forum up ASAP for you guys, we will work out the kinks now that it's up and usable.

Thanks for the great work! I like the look of bbPress, the only exception being the recent discussions panel being above the subforum panel.

You will soon appreciate the recent discussions being at the top. If you look at how you will be using the forum, you will find yourself replying to the recent topics which consist of active discussions from all forum categories. That means 9/10 times, there's no reason to click on a forum category. Even when creating a topic, you can do so from the main forum page and it will ask you which category you'd like to place the topic in when creating it. This means less time loading pages and more time actually reading and replying.

I do however think that we're going to need a plugin that handles quoting other people. There seems to be a block quote markup listed in the reply box but I don't know how to use any of those and I also don't think block quote is good enough as a method of quoting others in discussions. I'm sure there's a plugin for it by now though, so we'll look into that whilst browsing through any potential plugins.

I suppose I do use the recent topics box on ATT more than the sub-forums, you have a good point there.
Is there any option to upload images like the old software? That was a good feature.

Yeah - note that this is just a default installation with a default theme that I had to put in place as quickly as possible. Various functionalities and features will be added along the way.

I haven't seen a plugin that lets you upload images to the forum, but there is a plugin that lets you use IMG tags to display images you've uploaded elsewhere. Some kind of image support is definitely on my list of plugins to install, and also allowing the upload of avatars to give a bit of customisation. I pondered about re-activating signatures, but I still don't see any benefit to this so signatures will stay out for the foreseeable future in case anyone was curious.

I believe there is an attachments plugin that would allow this. I imagine I could probably write plugins to tailor anything additional, because I'm awesome like that.

I have enabled Gravatar for the time being, and it would seem that most people are using it, so good.

Yeah, I really like it too. It's made by the same guys who made WordPress, so it's very fast and flexible. I've not even had chance to get my sticky fingers all over it yet.

    phpBB is so very outdated.

I've found some useful plugins that I'll try and install once I'm home, though I might need Dan's help on a few that seems a little more complicated than usual. One plugin of note synchronises the blog and the forum. What this means is that any new posts I make on the blog automatically created a topic on this forum with the same title and text, and any replies to that topic are shown as comments on the blog post.

I think more people are replying because it's all fancy and new. It's certainly a lot nicer, and when all of the features are in place, it will be very, very nice.

It is much faster than the old one, which I imagine encourges more posting.

The main reason people are replying, and I see this as a fact rather than an educated guess, is a variety of the reasons mentioned above. Because creating a new topic and replying to one is much more convenient, people are more inclined to do so before that instinct kicks in where they change their mind because they CBA. Pages do indeed load quicker too, and there is less page loading involved due to all the recent topics being on the forum's home page, which also adds to that counter-laziness.

The new forum also means people are having fun 'exploring' the new software and seeing what's new and what's still the same. They probably find the whole concept of tagging topics a sort of meta-game in itself, kind of like grinding on an RPG where it's a chore but you still do it due to some kind of self-enjoyment you secretly feel.

You know, I think I over-analyse too much shit.

I think there's something to be said for over-tagging threads and posts, but I'll let Nemphtis handle that.

As long as people are tagging, I have no problems with it for the time being.

    There are some new features:

    • The bottom of the forum homepage shows all of the online visitors and recent visitors.
    • You are able to upload your own avatar by editing your profile.
    • Private messaging has been enabled.
    • The top of the forum thread displays links to related topics.
    • You can use bbcode like (img) (in square brackets []) like you can on normal forums

Glad you installed them all and got them working properly to boot. The post editing is going to be handy since most of these guys are too lazy to use HTML. Also, related topics will be taken for granted but in the long run people will come to appreciate it. Nice work man, this makes life that little bit easier on the forums.

I actually managed to install them without having to do a large amount of poking around. There is hope for bbPress plugin developers yet.

Man, I'm on my Mac at work; Trebuchet MS is such a rubbish font!
