That second card you linked isn't bad for the money :)

I think I might get that one to tide me over to the second generation of the DX11 cards. I'm fairyl sure my board will support it, definatly need to get a new PSU first though.

Though video cards should be a whole new topic, here is one I was recommended by a few people in case I absolutely had to buy a card to hold me over until the DX11 ones. Somehow, I think paying the extra £50 on the second one you linked to seems like a better deal though. Though I only say that because your one has a lot more memory, and I'm guessing that's a good thing.

Last post on GFX cards here. The card you linked wouldn't be an upgrade for me, as mine is about on par with that one. In other news GAME still haven't sent my beta key, they better get it to me before the 2nd of July, I don't want to miss the beta weekend.

I'd recommend getting a 700W + PSU, anything less and your system could start choking.

I was aiming for around that level, any paticular make thats good for PSUs?

I'm quite fond of Corsair - but I tend to look for the highest rated with the most reviews on OverClockers/eBuyer these days.

Ok thats my approch as well, at least I'm doing something right! List of things I'm considering so far:
My current case is one I got from college, it's probaly from the early 90s, late 80s. It sucks. Hard. Oh and the SSD is for Windows 7 when I get it.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
I'd leave the SSD out for now. The read/write speeds of that one aren't fantastic. If you're serious about getting an SSD, you want to get a proper one, not just one that has "SSD" on the label.
Don't like the case much. Looks a bit too plastic-y for my liking. I'm sure it would do the job though.

I'm not worried about an SSD till october so thats not a major factor. The case is obviosuly a matter of personal taste.

Or lack, thereof ;)

Touche. I like it and it has good reviews temp wise =P. As long as the bloke who sits next to it likeswho cares eh? ^^. Trust me, anything is better than what I have right now.

I'm not too fond on how the case looks either, but if you like it then that's ultimately what matters. On the other hand, if you want to show it off to your friends and say "I pimped my new PC" then you might want to find something that doesn't make other people's eyes bleed.
As for the video card you posted, I might pick it up myself since £150 seems okay and it's probably noticeable better than my GForce 8800 GT. Plus when the DX11 ones come out they will probably be quite pricey so I'll use this one until I reach a point where my video card can't handle the games I'm playing. Dan, any idea of the one Anthony posted is compatible with my setup? You should know more about my PC than I do (which is just wrong).

Yeah, it'll be fine. I can't quite remember what motherboard you've got in your machine, but if you've got an 8800GT then the new one won't have any issues.
It's sad how much better that graphics card is than the 8800GTX that I bought at the beginning of 2007, considering I paid nearly £400 for it or something. I've bought new compontents since then, but it's crazy to see how the technology industry has developed over the last 5 years. It's dissuading me from purchasing new components these days. I think I should just absorb the PC I have and get some good use out of it, rather than modernising it constantly and selling on the parts.
Still, my current PC is a fucking monster.

I found some more pics of the case and I like it more now. It's matte black, not plastic. It's also huge. It comes with two 200mm fans, one in the front and one on the top, both are blue LED fans and look awesome. I'l let my sister have my current GFX card when I upgrade, let her play WoW better.

I don't get this. Some guy on another forum is saying the 4870 is clearly better when compared to the GTX 260 because "It's around 10% faster AND cheaper." What's up with that?
Posted 2 years ago # | -
They seem to be margnally faster, but with signifgantly less memory. Also they're Radeons. I've had bad experinces with their cards so I stay away from them.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
I think they'd come off about the same. The Radeon has faster RAM, but the 260 has more RAM and a faster processor.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
I think I might get the Radeon since it saves me £50 and I only need it until the DX11 cards come out and become affordable so it should just about be able to manage in that regard whilst still being good value for money.

Why are you getting one in the first place if you want a DX11 card? Surely your 8800 isn't that bad?

My framerate sucks cock when I'm playing WAR on high quality, and lowering the quality makes the game look worse than it already does. Same goes for DoW, frame rate goes crazy on maps where there is rain on high quality.

I have gtx 295 running in quad sli in my new pc, when my pc arrives I'll run some benchmarks and post the results here.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Odd that you have major FPS problem with your 8800GT, I have one too and run WAR at full with no noticeble frame rate issues.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
According to them it's basically due to my monitor size, the 8800 could usually handle such shit but apparently it starts to strain after a certain screen resolution.
Posted 2 years ago # | -
Play the game at a lower resolution and find out.

Darfuria wrote:Play the game at a lower resolution and find out.
Yeah, been meaning to get around to doing that. I'll give it a shot tonight if I don't forget, my WAR sub is still active so I might as well try it before it ends.

Be stupid to spend £50 on another graphics card if the graphics card isn't the issue.

Especially when it's not just £50. By the way man, I saw a pre-owned 8800 GTX for £110 whilst clothes shopping today. That thing is surprisingly large, and has three fans.

My FPS was averaging at 70 on Aion when I put all the settings on max in the starting zone. When it was on default it was averaging at around 100. It's hard to tell how good your FPS is unless you're in a crowded PvP game where you'll actually notice it. I don't have any graphics-heavy FPS games to check it on, which would have probably made my life easier, maybe I should re-install the Crysis demo or something.

Damn!!! Gtx 295's are beasty. I played Farcry 2 and Arma 2 and graphics are just beautiful, my pc officially shits on ps and 360. One problem with the cards though, they get fucking hot, I can play Farcry for an hour then take out a the gtx 295 and fry an egg on it.
