I've been looking around at rental prices for Ventrilo voice chat servers and they're roughly £4.00 per month. I'm considered getting us a 10 slot server if more Zetzio members pick up a headset. Basically Ventrilo is a separate program from any game which runs in the background and lets us be in a voice chat room regardless of what we're playing, or even if we're just on the desktop watching video or browsing porn.
Why am I bothering with this? Because it brings us closer to how we play on Xbox Live. So when we're PC gaming, it's that same experience we have when we're in a COD4 lobby talking about some random shit while we own noobs. On PC games we only chat when we're in the lobby because we can't type and own at the same time.
It's surprising how few of us have a headset for PC gaming, so those of you who don't have a decent headset may want to post in the headset topic and I'll try and give you some suggestions on which one to pick up based on your budget. Even a cheap £10 headset from GAME is better than nothing, but I wouldn't recommend those for serious gaming.
So would anyone actually use a Ventrilo server if we had one? Do you have a headset or plan to pick one up soon? Let me know what you think. £4.00 a month is cheap as chips but I don't want to spend money if nobody is going to use it, I can get myself a meal at Micky D's with that.

I'd use a vent server alot. I'd just sign into it when I boot my PC up. If you want I don't mind chipping in a bit towards the cost.

Could Skype just not be used for this? Or is the idea that Vent can be opened in game?
I doubt I'd use it untill I get a PC capable of gaming proplerly.

I have used vent quite alot when I use to be in a pc clan and it is good. I would use it if we had it and would not mind sending a few quid your way to keep it up.

This is something for big groups rather than a couple of people. It's like a chat room but for voice chat. We do use Skype at the moment but Ventrilo does a much better job for a very small fee each month. Skype conference calls can only hold like three or four people the most.

Vent works much like IRC does, only with voice as well. A good quality hoster will give really good sound quality. It also seems to use less system rescoruses than Skype, which is of course useful.

Spot on. Skype, whilst being a relatively nice piece of software, is more suited for emigrated young adults and their grandparents back at home - so that they can have conversations containing "My, look at your sun tan!" and "How's the weather?". It's capable of conference calling, but the system resource usage combined with the dependencies of the host's connection make it a poor choice for VOIP when gaming.

I'm probably going to go ahead with a Ventrilo or TeamSpeak server soon, depending on which is cheapest. I urge those of you who don't have gaming PCs to still get a standard PC headset so you can join in the chats and just chillax with the rest of us when you're on the PC. Of course this is totally optional and I'm not forcing anyone to use it, but there's no harm in logging into Ventrilo and just chatting with the rest of us whilst you're playing a game, watching a YouTube video or even just staring at a blanc monitor.
As already stated, think of it like the IRC chatroom we used to have, except you don't have to focus your attention on it this time. You can be doing whatever on the PC and as long as you got your headset on, you can still have a conversation. So if you're not interested in it, at least give it one try before you dismiss it. I believe you can still use Ventrillo without a headset, you just won't be able to speak but can still hear what we say.

Man, i really miss talking to you guys on XBL live and shit. Been pretty fucking depressing without those wednesday nights. I think i have a standard shitty headset somewhere in my room so.. yeah i'll be up for this.
I really wanna PC-game with you guys too.

We will PC game like jizz-drooling Parrots eventually, it just won't kick off 100% until the whole crew gets gaming PC. I would play with you guys on PC a lot more but I'm trying to rush through my console games before I get too deep into the PC scene. By the time you finish one game, two new awesome games come out, it's a never-ending struggle.
If you can't find your crappy headset or if your headset is indeed too crappy for its own good, just invest in a new one. You'll want it for when we use voice chat in-game anyway so buying a good gaming headset will not be a bad investment. Check out my headset review for my Neckband, and keep an eye on the blog tonight as I should be uploading my Turtle Beach X1 review at some point today as well.

Just bringing this back up to say that I'll be getting a Ventrilo server soon enough. Aside from Jamie, everyone seems to be cool about using it and even Cem messaged me saying that we should get a Ventrilo server so it feels like something that could see some action. I'll try sorting this out after the expo.

I think our main games will be MMORPG, RTS and FPS titles probably in that order of popularity. Those of us playing Aion will surely use Ventrilo, and those of us playing Dawn of War 2 will also appreciate voice chat because in RTS games you rarely have time to type messages as you're too busy rushing units out and scouting control points.

So that's myself, Anthony, George, Dwayne, Michael, Matthew and Cemal who said they would be interested in participating in Zetzio's Ventrilo server. I think seven eager people is a good start, and enough reason for me to invest the measly amount required to buy a server.

Apart from DOW2 i'm not sure what games i have that the rest of you have. Well, i got my new bank card replaced so i suppose i can just buy from steam any game that people are thinking of getting.

So what are people thinking of getting soon on the PC scene?

These are the games i have from memory (at my dads house):

Far Cry 2
Crysis + Crysis Warhead
Football Manager 09 + 10 (soon)
Empire: Total War
Prototype
Virtual Pro Tennis 2009
All old DOW's and DOW2
COH and COH: opposing fronts
That recent game which is all about space battles

thats all i can think of the top of my head but there is some more.
Gonna get dragon age too when its out but not sure if that's online

Any big MMORPG, any highly acclaimed RTS, any FPS that is exclusive to PC or just much better to play on PC than console (Team Fortress 2). To be more specific, I'm pretty sure a lot of people are playing the newly launched Aion. Also any self-respecting PC gamer owns a copy of Counter-Strike and/or Counter-Strike Source, but any Valve shooter is definitely worth buying since Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead are very popular PC shooters alongside Counter-Strike.

Yeah i forgot to mention i've got L4D too, but the new game is coming out soon anyway. I also got the civilization games.. and supreme commander n stuff if anyone ever wanted to play those games.

Like MW2 will get us all on XBL together again, there will probably soon be a new RTS/FPS for pc that we will all get and play together the same way.

Yea I would go on vent just to chat but I never really play any games on my PC. Was checking out a article about PC gaming and according to Amazon only 6% of there MW2 sales have been for PC. It really does feel like PC gaming is dieing, although the few PC gamers that are left will still always think they are better than console gamers.
The only game I really playing on my PC is Empire Total War, but I may get back into DOW 2 when the expansion comes out.

Well having Vent may change your gaming habits George. You might be more inclined to play an MMO if you know the rest of us play it regularly. I don't play DoW2 at all right now, but I will when the Tau are finally in it. Until then I still play games like Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike Source, all of which are awesome games and play far more smoothly on a PC.

I don't know why the server's not connecting, I've been paying the bills so don't think it's a problem on my end. Hopefully it will just fix itself, since I didn't touch anything.
