The demo for Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was released on Xbox Live today, so no doubt many people hurried to sign in and see if the game is as good as it looks. After playing through the demo a few times, I was surprised when I realised the game had left a sour taste in my mouth when it was all over. There are various little issues that kept popping up during my experience which really got on my nerves.
The main issue I had was the camera, and boy was this a bitch. You can click the right thumbstick to flip your camera over to where your character is facing, or at least I think so. Whenever I click it during combat things start to go horribly wrong and I can’t figure out where the hell I’m facing. Towards the end of the demo you face an AT-ST, and god was I pissed when I died because the fucking camera was looking at the most pointless of locations while stormtroopers and an AT-ST turned me into Swiss cheese.
The second most irritating issue was the lock-on. If you want to pick up a specific object, it’s sometimes tricky to get your targeting on that particular thing, this is mainly due to there being several enemies and other objects right next to it. There is no target scroll, so you have to kind of twist the camera about while getting your ass shot just so you can pick up that object. Also throwing objects at people is great, but sometimes it’s actually quite tricky to hit people with it unless the impact causes an explosion. Upon realising how awful my throwing aim was, I sort of just gave up and decided to ‘launch’ my enemies into space instead of throwing shit at them. Why throw a big rock at someone when you can just pick the person up and throw them instead, right?
There’s also a meter under your health for your force powers. Basically this recharges over time, and it depletes very easily. I found it really irritating that just when I had a chance to do something cool, I realised my power meter is depleted so I have to block for a while and let it recharge. Speaking of block, it’s fucking lame, it really is. You can deflect most things with the lightsaber block, but while doing so you stand still and can’t perform any other actions. Considering how open the areas are in this game, enemies will chip away chunks of your health because you have no real way of closing the distance quick enough. All you’re doing by blocking is buying yourself some extra time to sit and think about your next move.
It’s not all hate though, so don’t worry. The controls scheme is well laid out, I had no trouble at all learning them as I went. All the pretty graphics and physics you saw in those videos are in the demo, so yes you can lift up a TIE fighter and throw it at something. Combining force powers is good fun, for example lifting up an enemy and then using force push, shame that force meter holds you back though. The QTEs are easy as pie to pull off, but they’re satisfying to watch. You can cut the AT-ST in half towards the end of the demo with a QTE, give it a shot. Still, this demo has let me down slightly. The game isn’t as great as I was hoping it to be but that’s not to say it’s a complete failure. Still looking forward to the full game, and worst case scenario I’ll just rent it.

I played it and loved it. First time i was like, ok, nothing special. But after the second time i realised how awesome the force powers really were, you can highlight almost anything.. and blasting people around is true fun.
Highlights were force gripping a peice of metal structure ontop of the bridge and bending it so it was in the flight path of a Space-craft, and watching it go boom. There was also a point when several guards were running at me at once in a closed hallway, i did the charged force push and sent all of them hurling down the corridor along with all the objetcs around them, causing them all to collide and explode. Brilliant! And then, as nemphtis mentioned, picking out a lone guy after i’d killed all his enemies in the force grip, lightning him/throwing a saber at him, and then finally force pushing him away. And the throwing of the guys using force grip normally is very cool, just the hand movement your character shows as he carelessly flings them into the cieling 100 metres above. And how they attempt to grab onto objects when your spinning them around :D priceless. I also loved at one point, when i was facing two guards, i grabbed one and threw him into the cieling, and whilst i did the other guard looked up at his comrade hurling in the air, in a shocked expression. Truly wtfpwned.
I had no issue with the camera what-soever, i have no idea what you’re talking about on that part. I don’t see how really you can ever have a problem with the camera when you simply move it yourself, it’s not like Ninja Gaiden or DMC where the camera angle is pre-set. The only thing i agree with in your post infact, is the force meter thing. However i found a little ‘Unlimited force’ power up at one point, and it made everything easier untill it ran out :). And i did not use the lock on, because there was no need. Your character would auto-lock onto whatever your attacks were directly facing anyway, i didn’t need to target anyone specific.
And even on the hardest difficulty the demo offered, it wasn’t that hard, so my only worry is this may be a game with a little too much focus on just having fun, then a difficult and rewarding challenge. But hey, i don’t mind the occasional non-stop fun.
Anyway, good game and i’ll be getting it in september when it’s out.

Lol, just tried lifting a guy in the air, and he tried grabbing onto his budy, so i was holding them both in the air and threw them both at the same time :D
Also, i held up a guy as he held onto an object, and then droped him so the object was ontop of the ledge, but he was dangling over it. The animation wasn’t the same and glitched, the guy was struggling to pull himself up. But soon he lost cause and let go.. falling 300 feet to his death.
So looking forward to this game now.

Yeah, all that shit is thanks mostly to the Euphoria engine, not TFU exclusively. Random fact in case you wasn’t aware, but GTAIV also used the Euphoria engine for those character animations. It didn’t take as much advantage of it as TFU is though.

i loved just floating a storm trooper out into the path of an oncoming Thai fighter…
had no problems with the camera either… the only problem was that it wasnt close enough when i was toying with a poor mortal soul spinning them around n around… haha…

The pshyics in the game were really impressive but the fact that you have to stop to use the force powers sucks balls. Also one slash from a saber should kill. Also no blocking when moving is dumb as hell. Combat should flow smoothley.

I know this is a bit late, but I just downloaded this demo and was pretty disappointed. The block sucked but the force dash was nice to close the distance. The lighthing was good but seemed a little weak but I guess it gets better as the game goes on.
I really just found the game a bit boring it was just the same thing over and over- Force grip/ force push- I never really used my lightsaber unless to do the lighting combo. Parts where cool like you just make your character walk slowly down the corridor then just smash everything out of your way with push.
I also found the camera annoying.
I think this will be a rental

Glad someone agrees, I thought I was going crazy.
